SPYRUS Announces Patent For Automated Policy Enforcement In PKI Systems

San Jose, Calif. - December 1, 2004 - SPYRUS Inc., the Global Information Assurance Company, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted U.S. Patent No. 6,816,965 for technology that enables automated policy enforcement in PKI systems. The patent was awarded on November 9, 2004. This technology has long been incorporated in the SPYRUS PKI System that has been deployed by the California Independent System Operator and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, among other organizations.

The SPYRUS PKI System is a configurable PKI System whereby the policy rules under which the certificate is issued and managed are specified as configuration data, in a software module called the “Programmable Policy Module” (PPM). This “abstraction” of the policy-setting software in a PPM enables the SPYRUS PKI System to be quickly configured for a new policy, and to add new policies, without the lengthy software development process that would otherwise be required.

A major business benefit of this policy configuration approach is the speed of deployment for a PKI system implementation. Also, by supporting multiple policies in this way, replication of PKI systems for each policy is avoided, with large savings in infrastructure costs.

Policy control of certificates is the most significant factor in high assurance, because a certificate is only as good as the trust in the process under which it was generated. By automating policy control, one can have high confidence in the result, and further, a secure and audible record of the certificate issuance.

This patent adds to SPYRUS’ broad patent portfolio in the United States and abroad that already includes a series of patents that provide secure authentication, conditional access, secure protection, and rights management of digital contents being communicated through any media. Several such patents enable subscriber conditional access and metering for digital content of any form: data, multi-media, movies, sporting or gaming events, and copyright printed material. Another patent covers active erasure of electronically stored data upon tamper detection. Another group of patents enables the use of a peripheral device with integrated security functionality, designed to prevent spoofing, ghosting, or other forms of tampering.

“This latest patent continues to demonstrate SPYRUS’ success in protecting its intellectual property around the world through the patent process,” said Tom Dickens, Chief Operating Officer, SPYRUS. “The Programmable Policy Module patent is just the latest in a long line of patents issued to SPYRUS in our core market for the secure management of PKI Systems.”
