SPYRUS Receives First Patent License for ECC from NSA

RSA Conference 2005

San Jose, CA --(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 2005 -- SPYRUS, Inc., the Global Information Assurance Company, announced today that it has received the first license for Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) issued by the National Security Agency for 26 U.S., Canadian, and European patents and patent applications. The “Field of Use” of the license refers to the use of the patented technology with elliptic curves in GF(p) and keys of 256 bits or greater, in products that are compliant with the FIPS 140-2 cryptographic security standard.

SPYRUS is the first Company under this arrangement to feature the patented technology in all of its product lines, including the LYNKS Series II Hardware Security Module (HSM) in PCMCIA and USB versions, the Rosetta Series II USB token and smart card, and the Signal Identity Manager. This unique license provides SPYRUS the opportunity to offer high-performance, high-security products intended for multinational information sharing initiatives in the Global Information Grid. In addition, these new capabilities offer commercial users significantly improved algorithm strength, compactness, and performance for applications requiring long term data protection in the financial services and healthcare markets.

“The time has come for users to upgrade the decades-old RSA/3DES/MD5 algorithms with a new suite that will be secure enough to protect sensitive data for the next 30 to 50 years or more,” said Robert Jueneman, Chief Scientist, SPYRUS. “The important thing to remember is that if data must be protected for 20 years, for example, you can’t wait for 19 years to begin to protect it adequately – you must use stronger algorithms now, in order to resist the more sophisticated attacks of the future. We anticipate that these cryptographic algorithms will quickly become the de facto standard for high-security, high-integrity commercial and civil applications throughout the world.”
