Rosetta® USB Token is First to Receive a FIPS 140-1 Certification

Certification Positions Rosetta as the Highest-Security USB Token for Commercial and Government Applications

SAN JOSE, CA - APRIL 24, 2001- SPYRUS®, Inc. today announced that its Rosetta USB token became the first USB-based cryptographic token to receive Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Pub 140-1 certification. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the body responsible for assuring conformance of commercial products to government security standards, issued the certificate on April 16th.

Rosetta USB is certified as meeting FIPS 140-1 Level 2, confirming the strength of its tamper-evident design. This achievement marks an enormous change within the USB Token industry where several hacks or security breaches of competing USB tokens have been reported.

The FIPS 140-1 standard encompasses multiple certification levels. Because Rosetta has a Level 2 certification, Rosetta becomes as an ideal choice for Government and commercial security solutions, which require increased physical security through the addition of tamper-evident seals.

"Rosetta USB simply represents the best USB solution available today," said Sue Pontius, President and CEO of SPYRUS, which produces the Rosetta card. "NIST certification gives our products an unmatched stamp of approval not only for government but also commercial security. This certification, in combination with our Rosetta Executive Suite authentication software, will provide organizations with a complete system for providing network and data access control to protect valued digital content and IP."

Because FIPS 140-1 is an acknowledged standard, commercial buyers will often demand FIPS 140-1 certification. Without such standards to guarantee product quality, performance, and reliability, commercial customers would be forced to buy questionable goods. Rosetta USB solves this dilemma by becoming the first USB token with FIPS 140-1 certification.

"With the FIPS 140-1 Level 2 certification, commercial customers will know that the Rosetta USB is a reliable platform for security which has been validated by an independent third party," Pontius added. "We look forward to continuing to lead the industry in delivering unparalleled high-assurance security products."

The Rosetta USB, with the Rosetta Executive Suite authentication software, provides a high assurance security token, validated by an independent third party against the FIPS 140-1 level 2 standard. This will enable the enterprise customer to have assurance its digital content will only be accessed by the appropriate personnel and just as important, to easily, cost effectively deploy a system that does not require a smart card reader product.

"Our goal was to create a high assurance token that will survive in the customer's environment," stated Bill Bialick, Director, Technical Marketing for SPYRUS. "We've washed it with our clothes, submersed it in water for hundreds of hours, and carried it on our key rings for months; in other words, we've treated it exactly like our customers do."
