SPYRUSŪ Selected as Qualified Small Business Supplier of Common Access Card Middleware Under New DoD Enterprise Software Agreement

--BUSINESS WIRE-- Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif - Aug. 15, 2002 - SPYRUS, Inc., a leader in Enterprise security solutions for Microsoft-based applications, today announced that the Department of Defense (DoD) has selected SPYRUS as a qualified small business authorized to supply Common Access Card (CAC) middleware under the new DoD Enterprise Software Agreement for the CAC program (Contract no. N00104-02-D-Q669). This contract is part of the DoD Enterprise Software Initiative.

The contract is for an estimated $6.1 million of the SPYRUS Rosetta Common Services Interface (CSI) middleware and maintenance services for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) clients to manage the DoD Common Access Card. This is a multiple award, firm-fixed-priced contract with a cumulative maximum amount of $26 million to be expended over the three-year program period. The Rosetta CSI middleware is the most attractively priced CAC middleware available under the DoD Enterprise Software Agreement, and is expected to be available for purchase by all DoD organizations on September 9, 2002, through the SPYRUS e-commerce website.

The DoD's "Common Access Card," or "CAC," will be the standard ID card for all active-duty military personnel, Selected Reserve and National Guard, as well as the DoD's civilian employees and eligible contractors. Distribution of the CAC is expected to exceed 4 million in the next two years. These secure ID cards support additional applications such as physical and logical access, which allows authorized personnel to enter buildings, log on to their computer systems, and work securely across an enterprise. The CAC program is the first major roll-out of a multi-application smart card.

This contract award to SPYRUS follows a DoD award earlier this year in which the company, as a team member of the KPMG Consulting Smart Card Solution Team, was selected to provide its Rosetta CSI middleware for evaluating biometric technology as an added layer of security for the CAC. SPYRUS is the only supplier of CAC middleware under the DoD Enterprise Software Agreement selected for this biometric evaluation.

The Rosetta CSI middleware has a long and successful history, having evolved from the robust product line that SPYRUS customers have been using operationally since 1993. The core middleware product upon which the Rosetta CSI is built, for example, has been deployed in over 300,000 seats for the Defense Messaging System (DMS).

"Our strong experience with deployment of SPYRUS authentication middleware in government and commercial programs shows SPYRUS is a leader in providing robust security solutions," said Tom Dickens, Chief Operating Officer, SPYRUS, Inc. "We look forward to working not only with all DoD organizations and DoD Government contractors on this contract award, but on future product enhancements that can begin to bridge the DMS and CAC programs."

Raytheon has been working with SPYRUS and the Rosetta CSI middleware on CAC related projects since 2001, starting with its licensing of the Rosetta CSI middleware for use in the Navy Marine Corp Intranet (NMCI) program. "Raytheon is extremely pleased to be partnered with SPYRUS on this contract," said Tim Bashara, Director, Secure Information Systems, Raytheon. "SPYRUS has long been recognized as a leader in smart card and authentication systems, and we have worked very close within the last year to integrate SPYRUS products with DoD IT systems, ensuring strong authentication of users. A great choice and a great company. We look forward to supporting them on this win."
